Civil & Structural Engineers

Brunswick Gateway House, Manchester

Civic Engineers have been appointed by Generation as Civil and Structural Engineers on the Brunswick Gateway House project, a 16 unit residential development on Brunswick Road in the Ardwick area of Manchester. The building, designed by Ollier Smurthwaite Architects, contains a mix of one and two bedroom apartments, including two duplex units, surrounding an internal courtyard.

The building is a five-storey braced steel frame supporting lightweight timber joist floors and roof and founded upon ground beams and mini-piles. The development makes full use of the available site, which has created challenges in construction phasing and logistics. Overcoming these challenges has been at the forefront of Civic Engineers’ approach to the project, and the design has been developed with careful consideration to construction without the use of tower cranes or available working space on the site.

Civic Engineers have also worked closely with the architect to develop the brickwork cladding which contains shallow recesses in the brick panels and deep reveals around the front and rear windows supported through a combination of steel structure and the corbelling capability of the masonry itself.
